Here are some practical tips to enhance the impact of your therapy sessions:

1. Build a Support Network

Having a strong support system outside of therapy can significantly enhance your progress. Identify one or two safe individuals in your life who can serve as advocates. These trusted friends, family members, or mentors can help you process what you discuss in therapy. Their presence demystifies the therapeutic process and provides additional emotional support. When you feel overwhelmed or need perspective, reach out to them. Remember, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.


2. Pause and Reflect

Before each therapy session, take a moment to pause and reflect. Consider what you’d like to discuss during that specific session. What thoughts, feelings, or experiences are most pressing? After the session, continue this practice. Reflect on what you’ve learned, any insights gained, and how you can apply them to your daily life. Pausing before and after therapy helps solidify your goals and ensures that you’re actively engaged in the process.


3. Journal Your Journey

Keeping a journal throughout the week can be immensely helpful. Write down themes discussed in therapy, your emotional responses, and any “aha” moments. Not only does journaling provide an outlet for self-expression, but it also helps you remember important topics to bring up during your next therapy appointment. Plus, reviewing your entries over time allows you to track your progress and identify patterns.


4. Homework if Helpful

Your therapist may recommend specific readings, exercises, or activities. Treat these as homework assignments. Providers often review hundreds of materials and books to curate resources that align with your needs. If a particular recommendation is made, consider it a valuable primer for therapy. Engage with the material, take notes, and discuss your insights during sessions. Homework complements your therapy work and accelerates your growth.
